Yahoo! News - Columbia Crew Coffins Mistaken for Caskets of U.S. Military Casualties: It is a story that will have journalism professors, conspiracy theorists and free speech advocates confused, amused and most likely up-in-arms until the next media scandal appears.
On Friday, NASA sent out a press release saying that several news organizations had mistakenly identified pictures of the flag-draped coffins of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s crew with images of coffins of war casualties from Iraq.
Uh, whups…

I had no idea that St. George is the patron saint of syphilis! For that matter, I had no idea that syphilis had a patron saint, or even needed one.
The rest of the article is interesting, again full of information about England’s patron saint I had no idea about. I’d always thought George to be uniquely British, it turns out that he wasn’t British in the slightest, and that he’s also the patron saint of several other European countries. That’s what I get, I guess, for not being raised Catholic.

I think I hurt something I laughed so hard at this. I would have laid money on it being impossible to make Tolkien’s Silmarillion even slightly funny, never mind downright hilarious!

Matthew Russell, an underwater archaeologist with the National Park Service headquartered in Santa Fe, N.M., said it may take several weeks to determine the canoe’s age and origin.
“This could be the only known find of its kind in Idaho,” said Mary Anne Davis, assistant archaeologist with the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office in Boise. “It’s pretty exciting — we really don’t know what we have.”
Evidence of an ancient trade in spuds?

I think Marty is spot on in his comments here. Over time, the net effect of outsourcing will result in a general levelling of wages and costs to perform similar work on a global scale, to some extent by retarding wage growth in developed nations, but primarily increasing wages in developing countries. This is evidently occurring in India right now - however, I expect the process to take longer than Marty seems to be suggesting. The next logical step if for work currently being outsourced to India to be outsourced to some other country.
Marty’s a smart guy, and his company offers an attractive alternative to the “chasing shadows” nature of trying to cut costs via outsourcing. I think he’s on to something that makes a lot more sense than just trying to bundle up your work and ship it somewhere else.

Guardian Unlimited | Online | Turning pages without cracks or tears: The British Library has put 10 of its greatest and rarest literary treasures, from the Lindisfarne Gospels to the world’s earliest dated printed book, the Diamond Sutra, on to the internet.
Tony Blair yesterday hailed the project, Turning the Pages, as a “magnificent example” of what the internet could achieve.
The electronic facsimiles are so realistic that the pages do appear to crinkle as they are turned by mouse clicks. However, the damage is an illusion. Smaller details, almost invisible on the actual manuscripts, like the realistic cat on the opening page of the Lindisfarne Gospel of St Luke, are revealed by a zoom facility.
This may very well be the coolest thing I’ve seen online in a couple of years. “Turning the Pages” is an amazingly fine example of how to apply modern technology to make rare or unusual materials more widely available. The quality of the scans is amazing!
A notice on the page claims that the documents are only available in MS IE, but I had no problem accessing several of the texts via Safari.

christophe thinks out loud: Eastgate Tinderbox: You would think that one of the most obvious uses for a laptop is to take notes. But until recently, I just couldn’t get into the habit. Too many years of taking notes in traditional notebooks. Word is too much in some ways (I spend too much time worrying about getting the text styles right), and not enough in some ways (if you need to start a new, but related, note stream, a new document seems like too big a jump, just hitting return five times seems not like not enough).
Then, I tried out Tinderbox from Eastgate. The initial learning experience, I must admit, was not instantaneous. It was a bit like having a new, eager personal assistant who only spoke Serbo-Croatian . . . the ability and desire to help was obvious, but we just didn’t speak each other’s language.
As with most international relationships, though, this problem was quickly overcome.
Another one drinks the Kool-Aid, and becomes a Tinderbox devotee. I recently remarked on Jon’s innovative uses for Tinderbox - Christophe appears to be using it to handle (among other things) shooting logistics for porn videos. How’s that for innovative?
