A new version of Tinderbox and a public beta of NetNewsWire 2.0 were released today. Two superb pieces of software. I’ve been beta testing both and can attest to the fact that both add features well worth checking out.
If you happen to be so benighted as to not be using Tinderbox to write your weblog, Ranchero also released a beta of their new weblog editor, MarsEdit.

Wise words from Ken Hagler as a wrap-up to a collection of reactions from Islamic newspapers on the Russian hostage crisis:
I would add that it is terribly wrong to fight the Russians by sinking to their level. I believe that when fighting against monstrous oppressors, it is absolutely necessary to maintain the moral high ground.
Of course, I’d say this applies as much or more to fundamentalist Islam as it applies to the Russians. Certainly, the Russians have engaged in human rights violations against Moslems and the destruction of Grozny was horrific. The behavior of the Iranian clergy, the Taliban, Hamas, Fatah and the Saudi “virtue police” are at least as reprehensible.
We held this moral high ground in the wake of 9/11, going into Afghanistan. We lost it with the invasion of Iraq, and Ken’s comment captures this perfectly. Regardless of who wins the election in November we’ll be a long time regaining it. That’s Bush’s true legacy.

Two recent articles concerning “hypertasking” and workplace stress really strike a chord with me. The life of a real estate agent, particularly a relatively new one, is always a life of hypertasking.
The burgeoning number of WiFi hotspots and popularity of handheld electronics that allow us to stay connected on the go may give us more freedom - but there’s a cost. Research shows that our brains aren’t equipped for this much activity. When we try to do more than even one simple task at a time, quality of work diminishes and tasks take longer to complete. When we try to do this for long periods, the result can be forgetfulness, sleeplessness, irritability and stress.
“Forgetfulness, sleeplessness, irritability and stress” is a fairly apt description of my life these days. While it’s easy to observe that all devices have an “off” button, the answer isn’t entirely that easy. Real Estate agents work when other people don’t - that’s when we show homes - and we work during regular working hours as well. In my profession, there’s a direct correlation between one’s income and one’s availability, particularly when you’re new to the profession. If you aren’t answering your phone, you aren’t meeting with clients - and you aren’t making money.
As with everything, the key is balance. If not being available is a problem, so is being too available - at least the effects of being too available are. In fact, I hit a wall a couple of weeks ago, and it made me step back and reassess how things are going.
Being successful in Real Estate is a marathon, not a sprint. For the past year, I’ve been running it as a sprint, mostly as a means of getting established and producing some income. I managed that, but at a cost. Now, it’s time to slow down, build a strategy, and capitalize on the effort of the past year. I’m working from home more, where I have fewer distractions and a more relaxing environment. I’m shifting my marketing strategy to get more return for less effort. I’m more focused on picking up listings than I am on buyers, because listings are less time consuming.
Most importantly, I’m not going three or four weeks without a day or two off. There’s only so long I can burn the candle at both ends.

Not only was I late, but I’d completely spaced that I had floor until I woke up and happened to look at my schedule on my PDA. I guess my mind had decided that I was taking the weekend off.

My life these days is incredibly boring, something I’ve worked long and hard to achieve. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make for very interesting blogging either for you, gentle reader, or for me.
As an antidote to this, I’ve started a new blog, lightning chaser. lightning chaser is a link blog concerned with my notes and research on the Tehnological Singularity. There’s less opinion here, very very little about me, but lots of links to articles about science, technology, and the social impacts thereof. Give it a look if you’re so inclined that way.
DSD will continue to be a personal journal and general weblog. I suspect posting volume will be much higher over at lightning chaser.
(I’m having fun with this one. Not only am I fascinated with the subject matter, but Tinderbox is beautifully suited to what I’m trying to do with it.)

As of this week, I’m planning on attending Tinderbox Weekend West in San Francisco, October 2-3. Who else is going? I’m massively looking forward to meeting some of the Tinderbox folks I’ve only ever had the opportunity to exchange e-mail with.
