Mary Hodder is a moron.
Worse, Dave Winer proves once again that he is possibly one of the lowest forms of life around.
Update: Mark Bernstein weighs in with some excellent commentary. In particular, his point about software pricing for professional applications is well-taken. However, it should be pointed out that Mary was using NNW in a manner not really appropriate to the software; she really should have been using a database of some sort, and that likely would have been more expensive than $24.95.

I just attempted to watch the first part of The Legend of Earthsea, a SciFi Channel adaptation of Ursula K. LeGuin’s Earthsea cycle. I managed to make it through about five minutes before the cognitive dissonance between what I was seeing on screen and my picture of Earthsea from the novels drove me screaming from the room. Maybe it gets better, but what I saw was David Lynch Dune bad.
Ah well, at least it prompted me to read the novels again, which I hadn’t done for probably 20 years.

I voted for John Kerry. I voted for him because I disagree with how the Bush administration has handled our response to 9-11. I voted for him because I object to the ongoing assault on civil liberties being perpetrated by by this government. I voted for him because I disagree with our decision to invade Iraq, and I’m disgusted by the completely incompetent manner in which Bush has managed the war. I voted for John Kerry because I dislike, disagree with, and distrust the Bush-supporting Christian fundamentalists I’m surrounded by just about as much as I dislike and distrust Moslem religious fundamentalists. I voted for him because I don’t like the direction this country has been moving in since George Bush was elected PResident, and I believe it’s time for a change.
On reflection, though, I didn’t vote for John Kerry, I voted against George Bush - and I think that’s largely why the Democrats lost the election. The Democratic party failed to articulate good reasons to vote for them, and those of us who voted against Bush simply weren’t enough to carry the day.
Clearly, the Democrats are going to have to get their shit together or face another drubbing in 2006, and lose the Presidency again in 2008. Garret is doing an excellent job in starting the thinking process of what needs to be done. The alternative is an increasingly marginalized party, pushed farther and farther to the fringes of American politics and mainstream life. There is a powerful Democratic message - the party needs to find someone who can communicate that message in a way more Americans can embrace it.
In the meantime, throwing temper tantrums isn’t going to help. In fact, this sort of bullshit isn’t going to do anything but convince “Middle America” that you folks out on the West Coast are a bunch of inarticulate, spoiled rich-kid cretins. Honestly, we’re all pretty convinced that’s the case anyway, and that you certainly can’t be trusted to run a government. Keep on proving it, and we’re likely to heartily agree that you should fuck off and secede.
Time to wake up and educate yourselves a little bit, you among the idiot-left. Even here in Indiana, always the first of the red states to go on the map, a not insignificant number of voters voted for Kerry. Voter turn out was high. For the last sixteen years, Democrats have been governor (they lost this time, after presiding over a series of corruption scandals and turning a billion dollar budget surplus into a billion dollar budget deficit). Our junior senator, Evan Bayh, is a not unreasonable choice for a 2008 (Vice-) Presidential candidate, if the Democrats really want to engage that vast American heartland that ended up completely red this time around. Mr. Bayh completely trounced his Republican challenger in this his second Senate election - a not inconsiderable feat in a state that votes decidedly Republican and certainly a better showing than we saw from Tom Daschle, hmm? Oh yeah - he was a two-term Governor of Indiana, as well. Keep in mind that Governors have won a whole lot more Presidential elections than Senators have.
You can prance around with your “Fuck Middle America” signs all you want, and end up being a prime cause of tossing this country to the fundamentalist wolves as Midwesterners recoil in disgust and anger and vote Republican over and over again. Or you can realize that there are smart, justice-minded people here that are actually quite liberal, in the traditional sense of that word, and who would vote for a good liberal candidate if one was presented. When you engage in this behavior, rather than seeking to engage with us, you’re doing the same sort of thing the Bush administration has been guilty of in relating to our erstwhile allies. You hate it then, but turn around and act the same damn way toward us. You might try getting your noses out of the air while you still have some allies here.

My father had his lobectomy yesterday afternoon. By all accounts, he’s doing as well as can be expected, considering that he just had something like half of one lung chopped out of his chest. According to reports from my mother, the surgeon seems to feel that he removed all the cancer.
Today, Hal’s mother had her lobectomy, and also appears to be doing alright. In the future we’ll have to plan these things better. Maybe next time we can get a “buy one, get one free” lung removal special or something.
In completely unrelated news, I’m dealing with the Closing From Hell right now, which aside from aggravating the shit out of me, is also proving to be a drag on my business. Posting that requires significant thought, such as more Tinderbox tutorial stuff, will have to wait until we either get this deal closed or I go postal on the mortgage lender.
Here’s today’s free advice - if you’re buying a home, always use a local mortgage lender. Out of state lenders always fuck things up, and that sweet rate your think you’re getting is usually accompanied by all sorts of hidden fees and charges. Plus, it’s a lot more difficult to get your hands around the throat of someone six states away.
