  BlackBerry maker out of options in legal fight

  I really dislike the Blackberry that I have to carry for work - it has to be one of the most poorly designed communication devices I’ve ever used, and the “Nextel”:http://www.nextel.com network has to be one of the least reliable I’ve ever dealt with. The majority of engineers in my department carry their own phones in addition to their Blackberrys, because they’re so unreliable and disliked.

  Having said that, though, what’s happening to RIM courtesy of NTP is a crock. If there’s a “poster child” case for how the current patent system is broken, this is it. It looks like NTP has won - and I hope they choke on their ill-gotten gains. Once again, lawyers triumph while everyone else suffers. First against the wall…

  BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Radar sees ice deep below Mars

  bq. Mars Express has become the first spacecraft to detect reserves of water ice deep beneath the surface of the Red Planet, experts have announced.

  bq. The Marsis radar experiment carried onboard appears to have discovered water ice more than 1km below ground.

  The more we confirm about Mars, the more I’m impressed with how right Kim Stanley Robinson got it.

  WorldChanging: Another World Is Here: Too Good To Be True?

  bq. UK online retailer “Good Gifts”:http://www.goodgifts.org/goodgifts/default.php wants you to buy a Kalashnikov rifle (most likely an AK-47) — £25. Or perhaps a rocket launcher (£55). Or a tank, for £1000. Not for your own use, mind you, but to provide the raw materials for enterprising blacksmiths and metalworkers in Sierra Leone, who turn the iron and such into “farm implements… hoes and axe heads… pickaxes, sickles and even school bells.” A single tank will provide a year’s work for 5 blacksmiths, they say, and convert into 3,000 items.

  This is potentially _very_ cool and a chance to really do some good. Obviously, the principle concern is making sure that the arms are actually going to the artisans to be made into tools, etc., and not ending up as cheap weapons to fuel some other pointlessly destructive civil war or insurgency. Worth investigating more…

  What, you mean kind of like how abusing juvenile members of your congregation, abusing your position as a trusted member of the community, and establishing a coercive hierarchy that for generations warps the lives of millions of people with soul crushing guilt destabilizes people and society? Oh yeah, let’s not forget acquiesence to the Holocaust and the deliberate repression of science and learning. Then there was that whole Inquisition thing…

  Sort of makes two guys or gals being in love with each other seem pretty minor, huh?

  Girl with peanut allergy dies after kiss

  bq. A 15-year-old girl with a peanut allergy died after kissing her boyfriend, who had just eaten a peanut butter snack, hospital officials said Monday.

  Wow. Talk about one hell of an allergy.

  It’s terrible that the young woman died, but I also think of her boyfriend. How messed up would the average 15-year-old boy after killing his girlfriend with a kiss? I imagine that’ll put a rather serious crimp in his dating activity…

  Tivo to Let Subscribers Choose Ads

  bq. DVR pioneer Tivo today announced plans to offer their subscribers the first ever television-based advertising search solution in Spring 2006. The offering will deliver what the company calls “relevant, targeted advertising� to subscribers that want to view particular categories.

  Oh, joy! I get to pick _which_ ads I want to see! Not a prayer that I could choose *no* ads, is there?

  I do love having a PVR, but somebody needs to clue in the leadership at TiVo: no matter how “revelvant and targetted” you think your advertising is, offering people a _choice_ of which ads they’re forced to watch is about like offering a choice of where they can get a boil. I really don’t want either, get it?
