Daily Kos: Who Supports The Troops? Democrats, As It Turns Out…
bq. …based on the over 300 votes the IAVA used in its calculation, all Senate Democrats have been more supportive of the troops — when it comes to their actual votes, over the past five years — than any of the Senate Republicans.
I say again: there is a *huge* difference between supporting our military and supporting foreign military adventures. This survey us yet more proof that the Republican elite see the rest of us, particularly those too poor to have much choice in the matter, as nothing but tools to be used and discarded. It is the height of hypocrisy for the Republicans in the Senate to clamor on about Patriotism and Spreading Democracy and Supporting Our Troops, and then routinely vote against the interests of those very same men and women in the service.
But then, events have proven that being a Republican and being a hypocrite pretty much go hand in hands these days, haven’t they?

I started learning Ruby on Rails today, primarily via O’Reilly’s “Ruby On Rails: Up and Running.”:http://www.amazon.com/Ruby-Rails-Running-Bruce-Tate/dp/0596101325/sr=8-1/qid=1161537578?ie=UTF8&tag2=dougmillernet-20 I’m just starting out but already I’m finding an affinity for Rails very similar to what I felt when I first started learning “PHP”:http://php.net years ago. From what I’m seeing developing in Rails is lightning fast and amazingly productive. I only wish I were doing more hands-on development at work rather than development project management; sinking my teeth into a real application or two is probably just the ticket here for some accelerated learning.

This turns out to be staggeringly useful. Possibly the best Firefox add-on I’ve found yet.
I’m also finding “Performancing for Firefox”:http://performancing.com/firefox potentially useful (the past couple of posts have been written using it).
I’m playing around with “Haiku,”:http://haiku-os.org/ an open source sucessor to the “BeOS.”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeOS To do so I’ve finally loaded up “Parallels Desktop.”:http://www.parallels.com/ Parallels is a nice virtualization tool, certainly better than the old Virtual Desktop product was on the PPC Macs, but I’ll be interested to try “VMWare’s”:http://www.vmware.com offering when they finally release it. Haiku is far from ready for use, but is sort of fun to play around with. Now, if I could just get my hands on an OpenStep 4.2 disk image…

A Place Called Darnell - a photoset on Flickr. This set of photos my mom posted show the small town of Darnell, Ohio, and the house my grandmother, now in her late 80’s, grew up in. The house is still occupied. My grandmother wrote and published a book concerning the history of Darnell and her memories of growing up there last year. Her efforts recently culminated in a plaque being placed in front of the home marking it as the home of the founder of Darnell in 1880.
